Job Summary:
The School of Communication in the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education at Cleveland State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 17, 2026.
The School of Communication offers majors in Journalism, Public Relations, and Communication Studies, along with minors in Digital Content Production, Broadcasting, and Health Communication.
The successful candidate will support undergraduate curriculum in broadcasting, journalism, digital content production, public relations, communication studies; and conduct required research/creative activity to earn tenure. The faculty member will deliver courses in areas such as audiovisual production, single-camera field production, multi-camera studio production, editing, graphics, and post-production, and media writing. Special consideration will be given to candidates who can teach creative and experiential courses in broadcast news and media production for promotion campaigns, and who can help students develop strong demo reels and portfolios tied to professional standards. The ideal candidate must be capable of teaching a combination of some of the following courses: public relations, campaigns, social media, and digital storytelling, depending on expertise.
The standard teaching responsibility is 3–3, with accompanying expectations for ongoing scholarly/creative activity and service. The successful candidate will contribute to the life of the School through superior scholarship or creative/professional activity teaching, innovative curriculum development, and service, including cultivating industry connections that benefit students.
The Levin College of Public Affairs and Education, also includes the School of Education & Counseling, the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs, and the Department of Criminology and Sociology. Minimum Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (Ph.D. or MFA) completed by July 1, 2026. Appropriate terminal degree completed by July 1, 2025. Persons who are ABD will be hired at the rank of Instructor;
- A research agenda focused on broadcasting, journalism, mass communication, media production, or a closely related field;
- Professional experience in broadcasting, journalism, mass communication, media production, or a closely related field;
- Evidence of effective teaching or strong potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate level in audiovisual production, single-camera field production, multi-camera studio production, editing and post-production, and/or media writing for broadcast and digital platforms;
- Demonstrated philosophical commitment to digital, technological, and disciplinary integration.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years or more of significant professional experience in broadcast journalism, news production, digital video storytelling, or related fields;
- A record of creative or scholarly work that demonstrates expertise in broadcasting and/or digital media production;
- Experience teaching audiovisual, single-camera production, multi-camera production, editing, post-production and/or media writing at the college level;
- Experience with ENG-style workflows, including story enterprising, pre-production, field production, interviewing, stand-ups, and editing;
- Proficiency with nonlinear editing systems such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid or Final Cut Pro;
- Experience mentoring for career development and student media;
- Evidence of ability to collaborate with local and regional media, and communication companies.
