About the Gene Burd Awards Committee
Purpose:
Co-sponsored by AEJMC and the Urban Communication Foundation, the Gene Burd Awards Committee oversees the two annual Gene Burd Awards: the Gene Burd Award for Research in Urban Journalism Studies, which supports scholarship that explains, enlightens, and improves journalism and communication in urban environments, and the Gene Burd Urban Journalism Award, which recognizes a journalist with a distinguished record of work in urban journalism.
Role of Committee Members:
Members review and evaluate submissions for the two different awards, with the research award selection process taking place in the fall and the professional journalist award selection taking place in the spring. They collaborate with AEJMC headquarters and the Urban Communication Foundation, maintain fairness and confidentiality throughout the selection processes, and help promote the awards to broaden participation and awareness.
