The Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication Magazine Media Division: We are a group of journalism professors who teach courses in magazine writing, editing, management, and design at dozens of colleges and universities around the world. We welcome contacts and inquiries from professional magazine editors and publishers.

The Magazine Media Division is a dynamic group of practitioners and scholars who study, teach and help create magazines and special interest media. Today, magazines are far more than multiplatform publications; they are brands producing curated content for specific audiences, with profound cultural significance for individuals, groups and society. The division’s members are professors and students at higher-learning institutions who share a continued interest in all facets of magazines and specialized media, from content creation, consumption and dissemination, to the cultural relevance of these media. The division publishes Magazine Matter, a biannual newsletter, and the peer-reviewed Journal of Magazine Media.

The Magazine Media Division offers opportunities for professors, professionals and students to network for the purposes of professional development, publication, employment and ongoing engagement with the issues and evolution of magazine media. We do this through:

  • Sessions at the annual AEJMC conference

  • The Journal of Magazine Media

  • The Student Magazine contest

  • Awards for top papers at the annual AEJMC conference

  • Scholar/Practitioner partnerships

  • Mapping the Magazine, an international confernece

  • Magazine Matter, our biannual newsletter

  • The Magazine Media Facebook page

  • The Magazine Media website

  • The Magazine Media listserv

The Magazine Media Division is a highly collaborative group representing all facets of the magazine world. We have noticed in recent years that a lot of research papers submitted to other divisions could be submitted to ours; we attribute this to a possible perception that our division is only interested in print magazines or case studies. In fact, we are interested in how niche publication content is created and consumed, as well as its cultural and political relevance. We are actively seeking more research submissions for our journal, conference sessions and contests. This is a great opportunity for scholars in cultural studies as well as those with a specific focus (women, LGBTQ, diversity, politics) to submit work about how people, issues and ideas are and have been portrayed, reflected and expressed through magazine media.
