CTEC Officers & Responsibilities
Division Head: Devin Knighton (Brigham Young University)
The Division Head is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the division, which includes the following: Working with each of the officers to ensure that all tasks are completed accurately and on time; financial oversight for the division; generating content for division communication; serving as liaison with the Journal of Communication Technology; serving as liaison with AEJMC leadership for all division and conference communication; leading the annual CTEC member meeting; leading monthly CTEC officer meetings; and other division-related responsibilities that may arise.
Immediate Past Head: Hyunjin Seo (University of Kansas)
Vice Head: Brian Smith (Brigham Young University)
The Vice Head oversees the division’s conference programming. This person gathers panel proposals from officers and division members, and coordinates with other division vice heads to co-sponsor programming using the AEJMC bidding system and process. This person is also responsible for developing the overarching conference schedule for the division, creating time slots for panels, research presentations, meetings, and socials that fit within the larger conference schedule. Regular communication from Felicia in the main office and the Council of Divisions will guide this position’s calendar throughout the year.
Research Chair: Mustafa Oz (University of Tennesse)
The Research Chair oversees the division’s research paper competition. This person is responsible for distributing the annual conference call for papers, overseeing the reviewer process, final acceptance/rejection of papers, selection of top paper winners, and recruitment of moderators/discussants for research sessions. This person is also responsible for creating the award certificates and ensuring top papers receive their monetary prize (if applicable). Regular communication from Felicia in the main office will guide this position’s calendar throughout the year.
Midwinter Conference Chair: Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch (University of Connecticut)
The Midwinter Chair oversees the division’s involvement in the Midwinter Conference research competition. This position is the first step in a four-year commitment to becoming Division Head. This person is responsible for distributing the Midwinter Conference call for papers, overseeing the reviewer process, final acceptance/rejection of papers, scheduling CTEC papers in the Midwinter conference, recruitment of moderators/discussants for CTEC sessions, and attending the Midwinter Conference in March. Regular communication with Elanie Steyn from the University of Oklahoma will guide this position’s calendar up until the conference.
Teaching Chair: Yuchen Liu (Cleveland State University)
The Teaching Chair oversees the division's focus on teaching. This person primarily works to gather teaching panel proposals and initiate possible panel proposals as necessary for the annual conference. Since many other divisions like to incorporate technology in their panels, the Teaching Chair actively pursues opportunities for collaboration with other divisions. The Teaching Chair also serves as a content creator for a teaching-related column for the newsletter and social media content.
Professional Freedom & Responsibility Chair: Jieun Shin (University of Florida)
The PF&R chair oversees the division's focus on professional freedom and responsibility, which encompasses free expression, ethics, media criticism and accountability, diversity and inclusion, and public service. There is a lot of potential overlap with technology in these areas! This person primarily works to gather PF&R panel proposals and initiate possible panel proposals as necessary for the annual conference. Since many other divisions like to incorporate technology in their panels, the PF&R Chair actively pursues opportunities for collaboration with other divisions. The PF&R Chair also serves as a content creator for a PF&R-related column for the newsletter and social media content.
Best of Digital Competition Chair: Jason Freeman (Brigham Young University)
The BoD Chair oversees the Best of Digital competition co-sponsored by the Visual Communication (VisCom) Division. The competition is an annual Web and app design contest presented at the annual conference and winners are selected based on how much they advance education or research in journalism and mass communication with the use of visually appealing and creative web or app design. The co-chair manages the whole process of competition: getting the call out, encouraging submissions, inviting judges, overseeing the judging process, announcing winners, preparing for prizes and certificates, and moderating the BoD panel session at the conference. CTEC serves as the lead co-chair of the competition in alternating years with VisCom.
Social Media Chairs (Interim): Toqa Hassan (Purdue University Northwest)
The Social Media Chairs oversee all of the CTEC social media accounts (currently Facebook and Twitter). These people are responsible for developing a social media content calendar based upon the annual communication plan, which includes news from other officers, the website, newsletter, and other AEJMC items. These people are also responsible for ensuring each account is posted to at least once a month (preferably more often) with division announcements as well as content related to technology, teaching, and PF&R. These people are also responsible for monitoring and moderating the social media accounts, ensuring that questions and comments are responded to in a timely manner.
Listserv Officer: Julia Kim (University of Florida)
The Listserv Officer oversees the CTEC listserv. This person is responsible for maintaining and developing the division’s listserv, building up the CTEC community via the listserv, and encouraging members to interact via the listserv. This person will also use the listserv to communicate division announcements to members, like the newsletter, website, and other AEJMC items. At least one monthly notice should be sent via the listserv (preferably more), aggregating news and alerts. Other one off emails may also be sent as needed throughout the year.
Newsletter Editor: Stephen McConnell (New York University)
The Newsletter Officer oversees the creation and dissemination of the CTEC newsletter. This person is responsible for creating at least four newsletters - Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. This person will collect content from other division officers, edit the content, and format the content for the newsletter. This person will also work with the Listserv Officer, Website Officer, and Social Media Officer to distribute the newsletter. All officers may suggest content as it's timely (e.g., the paper call and a request for reviewers in the spring issue), and they may reflect on current events that could be interesting to the division members.
Webmaster: Wang (Bruce) Shibo (Texas Tech University)
The Website Officer oversees the operation and maintenance of the CTEC website and community. This person is responsible for updating the website and community at the start of the academic year, and continues to update it at least three additional times throughout the year, or as often as needed.
