Guest Editors: Drs. Linwan Wu & Jason Freeman
Submission Deadline: August 1, 2025
Manuscripts are currently being solicited for a special issue of the Journal of Advertising Education dedicated to Media Planning and the Washington Media Scholars Foundation Case Competition.
Background
Media planning is a critical component of the advertising process, ensuring that advertising messages reach the right audiences at the right times through the most effective channels. This field has seen rapid advancements due to the emergence of new technologies, such as social media, artificial intelligence, and programmatic advertising, which have revolutionized how media plans are developed and executed. As the landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for advertising majors to acquire up-to-date knowledge and skills in media planning to stay competitive in the industry. Participating in competitions like the WMSF Case Competition is essential for gaining hands-on experience in media planning, a skill that is often difficult to fully develop within the confines of a classroom. This special issue of the Journal of Advertising Education aims to explore these themes and highlight the significance of integrating contemporary media planning education and the WMSF case competition into advertising academic curricula.
Potential Topics
Manuscripts for this special issue should focus on college education in the field of advertising media planning. We are particularly interested in submissions that integrate the Washington Media Scholars Foundation (WMSF) case competition into teaching practices. We encourage a variety of approaches to relevant topics, including sharing teaching experiences and conducting empirical research. Potential topics include:
- Case studies from the WMSF case competition: Detailed analyses of past case competition entries and their impact on student learning.
- Sharing WMSF case competition experiences: Discussing student experiences in the WMSF case competition and how to integrate this competition into classroom teaching.
- Innovative teaching methods in media planning: Exploring new pedagogical approaches and technologies used in teaching media planning.
- Integrating AI and programmatic advertising into curriculum: How to effectively incorporate these advanced technologies into media planning courses.
- Digital media strategies in advertising education: Teaching students to develop and execute digital media plans.
- Empirical research on media planning education: Studies examining the effectiveness of different teaching methods and tools in media planning.
