This year for News Engagement Day, the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Committee of AEJMC’s Public Relations Division hosted a panel to discuss the importance of news, free expression, and ethics. Our theme was “Engaging in Freedom, Expression, and Responsibility in News and Media.”

We were pleased to have several exceptional scholars participate in the webinar that is still available here for you to view. Participants included:

Panelists:

·      Cheryl Ann Lambert, Kent State University (bio)

·      Lois Boynton, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (bio)

·      Luke W. Capizzo, University of Missouri (bio)

Moderator:

·      Patrick Johnson, Marquette University (bio)

Key topics of discussion included:

  •          The importance of free expression.
  •          Ethical responsibilities for professionals in exercising free expression.
  •          How our responsibilities to DEI influence our understanding of responsible expression.
  •          Teaching students to exercise free expression responsibility and respond when others are not ethical.
  •          Building a civic culture that discourages threats, harassment, and political violence.

We hope you will enjoy this video. We encourage faculty around the country to share it in their classrooms.
