The PF&R Award is presented annually to one MCSD member who demonstrates excellence in research, teaching, and/or service that meaningfully advances the five Professional Freedom and Responsibility (PF&R) principles identified by AEJMC. These principles include the promotion of free expression; ethics; media criticism and accountability; racial, gender, and cultural inclusiveness; and public service.
This prestigious award recognizes individuals whose work reflects a sustained and impactful commitment to these core values, both within the academy and in broader societal contexts. Honorees exemplify how scholarship, pedagogy, and professional engagement can intersect to address critical issues facing media and communication, while fostering ethical practice, inclusivity, and accountability. Through their contributions, recipients not only advance knowledge and teaching in the field, but also uphold and promote the essential role of media in a democratic society.
The $500 award is open to any individual who has made significant contributions to scholarship in any of these five areas or has undertaken professional or service activities that promote excellence in any of the five areas. The research, service or professional activities could have been completed either during the preceding year or over a longer period. The award winner will be selected by the MCS Division’s Vice-Head Elect and PF&R Committee.
