Assistant Professor of Journalism – Digital Reporting (Tenure Track)
The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma is the No. 1 media program in the country, as ranked by the Broadcast Education Association. We are inviting applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Digital Reporting to join a growing and innovative journalism program. The appointment would begin in August 2026.
The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in Digital Journalism and be involved with ongoing course development in the journalism curriculum. The individual is also expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high-quality publications. Teaching may include cross-disciplinary courses within the college. The candidate will teach two courses per semester with 40 percent of work devoted to scholarly endeavors. The candidate would also teach graduate courses and mentor students through master's theses/projects and Ph.D. dissertations.
The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication was founded in 2000, after a generous gift from the family of Edward L. Gaylord, owner of the Oklahoma Publishing Company. The college has a state-of-the-art Gaylord Hall completed in 2004 and expanded in 2009. Gaylord journalism students create content for newspapers, digital outlets and TV stations around the state through Gaylord News, which includes a Washington, D.C., reporting program. A fellowship in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center in Washington provides opportunities for international reporting. The college’s OU Nightly newscast covers breaking news, weather and sports live five days a week via streaming and cable. The student-produced Sooner Sports Pad show has a live national audience every week on ESPN+, and the Gameday U football pregame show is broadcast live across the state. The college ranks No. 3 in News and No. 4 in Sports in BEA rankings. The faculty includes award-winning journalists, as well as scholars with interests including the following: ethics, law, media psychology, management, AI and digital media.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. by start date of appointment and professional experience in journalism and digital reporting are required. All applicants are expected to have a demonstrated ability to establish and carry out an agenda of high-quality research. Candidates are also expected to have expertise in the principles and practices of journalism in democracy. Research and work in one or more of the following fields is preferred:
- data visualization
- artificial intelligence use for digital platforms and products
- social media analytics
- social network analysis
- misinformation and disinformation
- needs and nature of newsrooms of the future.
